History of the
Multi-Carrier Systems & Solutions
Workshop

Since the principle of multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) was simultaneously proposed by Khaled Fazel et al. [1] and Nathan Yee et al. [2] at the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) in the year 1993, multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) has rapidly become one of the most wide spread independent research topics on the field of mobile radio communications. Therefore, the International Workshop on Multi-Carrier Spread Spectrum (MC-SS) was initiated by Khaled Fazel and Gerhard Fettweis in the year 1997. The biannual MC-SS workshop excels by the first live demonstration of an MC-CDMA demonstrator, by biannual published special editions on MC-SS of the European Transactions on Telecommunications (ETT), and the first articles about Interleaved Frequency Division Multiple Access (IFDMA) [3, 4], Spread Spectrum Multi-Carrier Multiple Access (SS-MC-MA) [5], 2D pilot-aided channel estimation [6], and Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) [7, 8]. Finally, the workshop proceedings are published in book-form by Springer.
